A copy of a letter from Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad, sent from Constantinople [Istanbul] and dated 23 September 1802.
In response to Jones’s letters concerning the situation in Bagdad after the death of the Bashaw [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad] and the nomination of the Kiaya [‘Alī Pāshā al-Kahyah] as his successor (see IOR/L/PS/9/76/251, 260-262), Elgin states that he has lobbied the Porte [Government of the Ottoman Empire] to confirm the Kiaya’s appointment, which he believes has now been approved. Elgin also dismisses Jones’s earlier suggestion of sending ‘a great Personage’ [Yūsuf Ẓīa al-Dīn Pāshā, Grand Vizier to the Ottoman Sultan] to assert the control of the Porte in Bagdad.
