Correspondence of Jonathan Lovett

This item contains:
1. A report of intelligence received from Yezd [Yazd], signed by Jonathan Henry Lovett, Resident in Bushire [Bushehr], and dated 17 September 1803. The report describes affairs in Afghanistan and Khorasan, including the rule of Mahmoud [Mahmūd Shāh Durrānī], the movements of the sons of the former ruler Zeman Shah [Zamān Shāh Durrānī], civil unrest in Kabool [Kabul], and the ongoing independence of Meshed [Mashhad] from the Persian [Iranian] Government.
2. Translations of letters from Jafer Kooly Khan [Ja’far Qulī Khān] and Mirza Reza Kooly [Mīrzā Rezā Qulī Navā’ī Munshī al-Mamālik], Persian Ministers, to Jonathan Lovett, received 14 August 1803. The Ministers state that the Shah does not blame the British Government for the death of Mahomed Khulleel Khan [Ḥājī Muḥammad Khalīl Khān Qazvīnī, Persian Ambassador to India], report that Mahomed Nabee Khan Mullic ool Tujar [Muḥammad Nabī Khān Malik al-Tudjār] has been appointed as the new Ambassador to India, express hope for continued friendly relations between Britain and Persia, and summon Lovett to Court.
3. A letter from Jonathan Lovett to Cheraugh Aly Khan [Chirāgh ‘Alī Khān Navā’ī, Vizier to the Prince-Governor of Fars], sent from Bushire and dated 28 September 1803. Lovett states that he is unable to travel to Court due to ill health, and instead proposes sending a letter from the Governor-General of Bengal to Court via his Moonshee [Munshī, secretary] Syed Ahmed Fereedodeen [Sayyid Aḥmad Farīd al-Dīn].
4. A translation of a letter from Cheraugh Aly Khan to Jonathan Lovett, received 7 September 1803. The letter states that the Shah’s ministers have ordered Lovett to proceed to Shiraz and on to Court, and that Aga Baba Khan [Āghā Bābā Khān] has been sent to accompany Lovett as his Mehmandar [host].
