- Letters between Samuel Manesty and Harford Jones
- Scope & Content:
-
This item contains copies of ten letters between Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], and Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdat [Baghdad, also written as Bagdad in the letter], dated 23 September-14 October 1804.
The correspondence covers:
- An alleged threat to Coja Mookiel ibn Minas [Khawājah Mikaeil bin Minas], East India Company Linguist in Bagdat, from the Kia [Deputy Governor] of Bagdat, which causes Jones to leave the city
- A dispute between Jones and Coja Johannes Rafail Babick [Khawājah Hovhannes Rafael Babik, Armenian merchant in Trieste] arising from the commission charged by Jones to execute the estate of Babick’s late brother, Coja Stephen Rafail Babik [Khawājah Stepan Rafael Babik, Armenian merchant in Baghdad]
- A meeting between Manesty and the Bacha [‘Alī Pāshā al-Kahyah, Governor of Baghdad]
- Reconciliation between Manesty and the Bacha after a dispute the previous year arising from the detention in Bussora of an Egyptian woman living with a British sailor (see IOR/L/PS/9/76/299)
- Manesty’s allegations that Jones attempted to turn the Bacha against him during his approach to Bagdat from Persia [Iran] (see IOR/L/PS/9/76/353), leading to an expression of total loss of trust in Jones.
Duplicates of some of this correspondence are catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/357 and 359.
