A copy of a letter from Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], to Marquess Wellesley, Governor-General of Bengal, sent from Bussora and dated 2 January 1805.
The letter reports the capture of the ships Shannon and Trimmer in the Persian Gulph [Gulf] by the Gausemee Arabs [al-Qawāsim] of Raz il Khima [Ra’s al-Khaymah]. Manesty proposes sending an envoy to Draeeah [Diriyah] to negotiate with Sood ibn Abdil Aziz [Sa‘ūd bin ‘Abd al-‘Azīz Āl Sa‘ūd, Emir of Diriyah] for restitution and safe passage for British ships in the Gulph. Manesty also recommends that ships from the Gulph be denied entry to British-controlled ports in India and that only heavily guarded British ships be sent to the Gulph.
The letter also forwards copies of letters to Manesty from the captains of the Shannon and Trimmer (catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/375 and 352) and Manesty’s instructions to ships’ captains (catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/373).
