- Water-colour painting of the River Gori in Uttar Pradesh by James Manson (1791-1862), c.1826. This image is from an album of 12 drawings of landscapes in Almora and accompanies a 'Report of the Mineral Survey of the Himalaya Mountains lying between the Rivers Sutlej and Kalee' by Captain J.D. Herbert, dated 1826 (Mss Eur E96, Kaye no.377). Manson was assistant to the Superintendent of the Geological Survey of the Himalayas from 1823 to 1828.Uttar Pradesh in northern India is bordered by Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana to the west and Uttaranchal and Nepal in the north. The region has a rich variety of scenery encompassing open stretches of meadow, dense forests, snow-capped mountains and perennial rivers most notably the Yamuna and the Ganga, the two holy rivers of Indian mythology. The River Gori originates from two glaciers in the Himalayan mountains and meets the River Kali at Jauljibi.
