- Scope & Content:
- Ground plan of the Ghatotkachh cave at Gulwada, near Ajanta in Maharashtra from James Burgess' 'Original Drawings from the Buddhist Rock Temples at Ajanta.' The Ghatotkachh caves are located 11 miles from Ajanta and includes two Buddhist excavations and one smaller cave. This cross section is of a Buddhist vihara or monastery which dates approximately from the 5th century. The vihara consists of a square hall supported by 20 pillars and surrounded by many cells on the sides. Along the back wall there is the main shrine with a sculpture of a seated Buddha flanked by two beautifully decorated pillars.
