Pashupatinath Temple is Nepal’s most sacred Hindu shrine and one of the subcontinent’s greatest Shiva sites, a sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati River. The roofs and pediments over the main doors are of gilded copper and the doors repoussé silverwork. At the main entrance of the shrine lies a gigantic golden bull, Lord Shiva’s celestial vehicle. Along the side of the complex are stone sculptures dating back to the fifth century AD.
