- Title:
- Section of the inlet sluice of the Khan Sarovar at Patan. Surveyor: Burgess, James (1832-1916)
- Scope & Content:
- Folio 5. Illustration of the section of the inlet sluice of the Khan Sarovar at Patan from James Burgess' 'Original Drawings [of] Architecture of Northern Gujarat.' The city of Patan located in Gujarat, was formerly called Anhilvada or Anhilpur and was established in 765 by Vanaraja, the first king of the Chavada dynasty. The Khan Sarovar, a water tank, is located on the southern part of Patan. The Khan Sarovar was constructed as a water reservoir in the 16th century by Khan I Azam Mirza Aziz Kokah, the governor of Gujarat. This large water tank, square in shape measures 1228 by 1273 feet. Stone steps lead to the water on all four sides of the tank. ?On the south-west is the outflow or waste-weir, with three openings, separated only by pillars of Hindu workmanship? By this arrangement the water is prevented from rising above a certain height during the rains, when the river flows.? Inscribed: Govt. Archaeol. Survey of Western India. No. 726. Stamped: Plotted by Kesav Murar; Inked by Sitaram Dinkar.
