- Title:
- Plan, Minar and Buttress from the Gumara [Gumada] masjid at Patan. Surveyor: Burgess, James (1832-1916)
- Scope & Content:
- Folio 17. Illustration showing plan, minaret, and buttress from Gumada Masjid at Patan from James Burgess' 'Original Drawings [of] Architecture of Northern Gujarat.' The city of Patan located in Gujarat, was formerly called Anhilvada or Anhilpur and was established in 765 by Vanaraja, the first king of the Chavada dynasty. The Gumada Masjid, composed of sandstone, brick and plaster, used several design elements from the 15th century architectural style seen at Ahmadabad. The mosque's interior measures 65 by 26 feet and the interior is divided into seven bays and three aisles across the length. Along the back wall, there are three mihrabs or prayer niches. The central niche has a Persian inscription giving the details of the mosque's construction, patron, and dates. The windows, buttresses, and niches in the minarets are covered with decorative carved details or perforated stone lattice work which are similar to the styles seen at Ahmadabad. Inscribed: Govt. Archaeol. Survey of Western India. No. 922. Stamped: Plotted by S J Pacheco; Inked by Ganpat Anandrao
