Portrays a seven-mile length of the Shat Al Arab[Shatt al Arab] in southern Mesopotamia [Iraq] from Busra [Basra, Iraq]northwards to Gurma‘t ‘Ali [Garmat Ali, Iraq]. Depicts hydrology, includingsoundings, sand, marsh and canals, relief by hachures, vegetation, cultivation,roads, settlements, town walls, place names and topographical notes.
The tracing has been later mounted on to paper backed with linen to which the title 'Plan of the Shat al 'Arab or Basrah River' has been added.
The accompanying manuscript map IOR/X/3184/1 bears the notes'Trigonometrically Surveyed by Lieut[enan]t W[illia]m Collingwood, H[er].M[ajesty's]. I[ndian]. N[avy]. May 1859' and 'Lieut[enan]t W[illiam]Collingwood Fecit et del[ineavi]t' [Made and drawn], and is signed by'W[illiam] B[eaumont] Selby, C[o]m[man]d[er]. I[ndian]. N[avy]. & Surveyorin Mesopotamia'.
