This part of the volume consists of a copy of an enclosure to a despatch from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the Secret Committee, Number 43 of 1840, dated 30 June 1840.
The enclosure consists of an ‘extract from a private letter from Herat’ (neither the sender nor intended recipient are named), stating that: since the arrival of the mission at Herat, two of the officers attached to it, both of the Bengal Artillery, have been despatched to Kyva [Khiva]; the last news received a few days ago of the Russian advance was that the Russian force of 12,000 infantry and forty guns is still forty or fifty marches distant; that affairs with Persia [Iran] are still unsettled; that Colonel Charles Stoddart is still a prisoner at Bokhara [Bukhara]; and that the harvest of Herat is almost ripe and ‘promises to be most abundant’.
