- Scope & Content:
-
Enclosures to a despatch from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the Secret Committee, Number 42 of 1847, dated 28 April 1847. The enclosures are dated 21 February to 14 March 1847 and contain correspondence relating to affairs in Persia [Iran].
Papers comprise the correspondence of Her Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia addressed, under flying seal, to Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, covering the subjects of: the attitude of the Qajar Prime Minister to royal princes in exile and the few exceptions already in custody; an accusation from Her Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia that the Prime Minister of Persia is guilty of corruption for not prosecuting a case of torture and murder against one of the Shah’s brothers; the Prime Minister’s favourable attitude for the abolition of the trade in enslaved people in Persia in contrast to that of Ottoman authorities who allegedly object on religious grounds; and observations on Persia’s demand for firearms supposedly in readiness for a war between Britain and Russia, of which Persia might take advantage.
Correspondents include: Her Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia; Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay; and the Governor-General of India.
