Enclosures to a despatch from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the Secret Committee, Number 43 of 1847, dated 29 April 1847. The enclosures are dated 18 October 1844 to 20 April 1847 and contain correspondence relating to affairs in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq].
Papers include: a request from the Secretary of the Government of India for a succinct report or ‘précis’ of the British Government’s first communication with Turkish Arabia, listing all Bagdad [Baghdad] and Bassora [Basra] residents, political agents, and staff, their names, salary, and establishments, concluding that ‘no date of its first Establishment is traceable’ according to records of the Government of Bombay; copies of the ‘précis’ later forwarded to the Government of India and Secret Committee (a note on folio 412 states a copy was bound separately, location not recorded); and a report from the Military Auditor General supplies a schedule of monthly and annual costs for the East India Company steam vessel Nitocris stationed on the river Euphrates.
