- f.5. Plan of Cave XXIII, a Hindu temple at Ellora from James Burgess' 'Original Drawings [of] Elura Cave Temples Brahmanical and Jaina, IIII.' The spectacular site of Ellora, in Maharashtra, is famous for its series of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave temples excavated into the rocky façade of a cliff of basalt. The works were carried out under the patronage of the Kalachuri, the Chalukya and the Rashtrakuta dynasties between the sixth and the ninth centuries. ?This [is a] small series of shrines, instead of cave temples. They are probably of later date than any of the larger ones. The ground plan? from which it will be observed that they are huddled together and contain six round vedis and in one of the shrines in No. XXIII is a trimurti on the back wall.?
