In the foreground is the Modder River and Modder River Dam. Several structures are on the south bank, including a large fortress-like building. Near the middle of the frame are large rectangular ponds, presumably part of the municipal water works. In the middle background is the Observatory koppie. The 60-inch building is prominent. The planted trees have grown to a reasonable height (approximately the height of the 60-inch turret). The Residence can be made out. Both 60-inch and Residence are highlighted by faded writing and arrows on the photograph. At the foot of the koppie the astronomer's cottages and hostel can be made out. Mazelspoort Road does not yet exist.
