- Title:
- Three steam wagons carting the 60-inch telescope parts, 1930 June.
- Scope & Content:
-
Three steam wagons with cargo in a field, south of the Boyden Observatory site. At least 19 people can be seen. The two lead vehicles have four wheels; the last has six wheels, of which the rear pairs are coupled. Each vehicle has a name plate on the cabin; from left to right these are "TCH [obscured]", "CETEWAYO", and "PANDA". The three steam wagons seem to be named for monarchs of the Zulu Kingdom: "Pando" being King Mpande kaSenzangakhona (1840-1872), "Cetewayo" being King Cetshwayo kaMpande (1873-1879), and "Tch..." is possibly King Shaka kaSenzangakhona (1816-1828). The cargo consists of several crates, one of which has writing on, including "HCO EAST LONDON SOUTH AFRICA". In the background is the Boyden koppie, with the Residence visible on the left. LSB03_0001, PLB35_0010 and PB13_0013 are derivatives. PLB39_0017 is the best version.
