- Title:
- SKETCH OF SOUTHERN PERSIA.
- Scope & Content:
-
The map shows southern Persia [Iran] with its environs including Turkey [Ottoman Empire], Afghanistan, Baluchistan [Balochistan], the Persian Gulf and ‘Russian Territory’ to the north-east of Persia, as designed by Major Sir Percy Molesworth Sykes and traced by K[han] B[ahadur] Ashgar Ali [Aṣghar Alī]. The map depicts southern Persia as divided into three zones, each demarcated, from west to east, by borders of blue, yellow, and red watercolour, which Sykes has defined in terms of their strategic importance to the British, the details of which he discusses in despatch No. 53 of 29 June 1900 (IOR/L/PS/20/FO14, ff 281-282). The map depicts major settlements and river systems. The Bampur Valley is also indicated.
The map bears the printing statements: ‘(62.10/1900.1258) F[oreign].O[ffice]. 1635.’, and ‘HARRISON & SONS, LITH[ographers]. ST MARTINS LANE, W.C.’
