This item comprises copies of a despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Duke of Argyll, HM Secretary of State for India, Number 7 of 1873, dated 10 January 1873. The enclosures are dated from 26 March to 6 August 1872 and concern a memorial submitted by British merchants trading in the Persian Gulf to Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident at Bushire [Bushehr]. The memorial requests certain modifications be made to the existing Commercial Treaty with Persia [Iran]. The details and merit of the proposed modifications are discussed within the correspondence.
Enclosures come from HM Minister, Teheran [Tehran]; HM Vice-Consul, Teheran; HM Consul-General, Tabreez [Tabriz]; and HM Consul, Resht [Rasht].
The French language material comprises a report on the views of the mercantile community in Tabreez on the proposed modifications.
