The item is a collection to Bombay Political Despatch No. 1 of January 1868, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of Bombay, Political Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay Political Despatch No. 92 of 29 October 1867 to the Secretary of State for India, on the subject of affairs in Muscat.
The enclosures consist of a letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the Government of Bombay, dated Muscat, 24 September 1867, and a translated letter from Sayed Saulim [Sayyid Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Sultan of Muscat, to Pelly, dated 19 September 1867.
The papers discuss the calming situation at Muscat following unrest after Saulim's accession to the Sultanate and pressure from Pelly on the Sultan not to impose a proposed ban on the sale of tobacco.
