This map depicts irrigation control in central and lower ‘Iraq [Iraq], showing the main waterways including the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Shatt Al ‘Arab [Shatt al-Arab] and other tributaries, canals, channels, and lakes. Other irrigation and water features included in the map are river barrages, spillways, and an area liable to flooding to the north west of Karbala. Shaded areas indicate ‘Rice Areas’ and canalized areas operated by the Irrigation Department. Irrigation regulation and control points referred to in the text at IOR/L/PS/20/C253/1, f 76 are indicated by circled numbers in red. The map also shows the boundary with Iran, key settlements along waterways, and main railways.
