Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to theSecretary of State for India, No. 24 of 1869, dated 16 November 1869,containing enclosures dated 11 September-14 November 1869.

The enclosures consist of copies ofcorrespondence relating to an attack on Bahrein [Bahrain] led by the island’sformer ruler Mahomed bin Khalifah [Muḥammad bin Khalīfah ĀlKhalīfah], resulting in the deposition and assassination of his brother andsuccessor Ali bin Khalifah [‘Alī bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah]. Topics coveredinclude:

  • Accounts of the attack and the background to it
  • Reports that Mahomed bin Khalifah has subsequently been imprisoned, and possibly killed, by his allies in the attack
  • Insistence by the Wahabee [Wahhābī] Ameer Abdoolla bin Fuysul-al-Saoud [‘Abdullāh bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd, Emir of Najd] that he had no part in the attack, despite it being launched form his territory and plundered property being returned there
  • British responses to the attack, including demanding the surrender of its leaders.

The primary correspondents are the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, the Government of Bombay and the Government of India.
