Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, Number 87 of 1866, dated 17 May, containing enclosures dated 17 May 1866.
The principal enclosure consists of a copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of India to HM Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia [Iran], inviting the latter’s mediation at the Court of Teheran [Tehran] for an amicable settlement of differences existing between the Shah [Shāh] of Persia and the state of Muscat on the question of the supremacy of either power at the Port of Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ‘Abbas]. HM Minister is also charged with ascertaining as far as possible the precise intentions of the Shah’s Government with respect to Bunder Abbass and the extent of their support for the ‘threatening’ military presence at Bunder Abbas of the Prince Governor of Fars’s representative.
