Mahomed bin Khaleefah has been Permitted to Reside at his Former Capital
- Scope & Content:
- Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 59 of 1869, dated 20 February 1869, including an abstract and enclosures numbered 3-7, dated 22 October 1868-10 February 1869.
The enclosures relate to:
- The request by the new Ruler of Bahrein [Bahrain], Sheikh Ali [Shaikh ‘Alī bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah, also spelled Alee in this item], that his brother Mahomed bin Khuleefa [Muḥammad bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah], the former Ruler of Bahrein, be allowed to reside in Guttur [Qatar, also spelled Guttar and Gwattur in this item]
- The subsequent approval by the Government of Bombay and Government of India of Mahomed bin Khuleefa instead residing in Bahrein itself, where Shaikh Ali can closely monitor his activities and be responsible for his ‘good conduct’.
The papers include a report by Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf and his correspondence with Mahomed bin-Sanee [Muḥammad bin Thānī Āl Thāmir], Ruler of Guttur, and Sheikh Ali. Also covered is Pelly’s refusal, for now, to remit a portion of the fine imposed on Bahrein in 1868.
The correspondents are: the Government of India; the Secretary to the Government of Bombay; and Pelly.
The Political Despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 22 March 1869.
