- Title:
- Muscat and Persia Affairs in Relation to Bunder Abbass
- Scope & Content:
- Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 101 of 1869, dated 20 March 1869, with an enclosure numbered 2, dated 5 March 1869.
The enclosure consists of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay to the Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department, forwarding correspondence of Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf. In the correspondence, which includes a report by Captain Alfred Cotton Way, First Assistant Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, it is claimed that:
- The Persian [Iranian] Government will not allow Syed Saulem [Sayyid Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd], deposed Sultan of Muscat, to hold Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ‘Abbas]; and it is unlikely that the Shah [Shāh] of Persia will recognize as valid the lease recently granted to Syud Saulem for Bunder Abbass and its dependencies
- Hajee Ahmed [Ḥājjī Aḥmad] is no longer Vizier to Syed Saulem, is acting under the name ‘Kadim Naleiya Ahmed-bin Mohomed Ali Nazem Moham Benadur, a servant of the Persian Government’, and is claiming that his role under Syed Saulem was done ‘out of mere friendship’.
The Political Despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 22 April 1869.
