- Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 173 of 1869, dated 3 June 1869, with an abstract and enclosures numbered 3-4, dated 26 April-26 May 1869.
The enclosures consist of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay to the Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department, forwarding letters from Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, and the Government of India’s response. The papers cover and include:
- The destruction by HMS Dryad of a Persian [Iranian] vessel near Mogo [Moghuyeh], the protest of the Persian Governor of Mogo, and the Government of India’s decision to instigate an enquiry into the incident
- Pelly’s remission of a portion of the fine imposed on the Ruler of Bahrein [Bahrain] last September, with the Government of India’s approval
- A report that the Prince Governor-General of Fars is being succeeded by the eldest son of the Shah [Shāh] of Persia
- The alleged ‘piratical’ capture, by the Sheikh of Kishm [Shaikh of Qeshm], of Rahmanee, a ship belonging to the deposed Sultan of Muscat, Syud Saulim [Sayyid Sālim bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd]
- The movements of Syud Saulim and Sidaree [Al-Sudayrī] ‘the Wahabee [Wahhābī] Lieutenant’ on the Arab Coast, and the claim that the latter is endeavouring to persuade the ‘Chiefs of the Littoral’ to support Syud Saulim
- A report that Syud Saulim’s brother Syud Nasir [Sayyid Nāṣir bin Thuwaynī Āl Bū Sa‘īd, the illegitimate son of late Sulṭān Sayyid Thuwaynī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd] has arrived at Gwadur [Gwadar] to take possession and is supported by the people there
- The agreement signed by representatives of the rulers of Bahrein and the Gutter [Qatar] Coast, regarding the annual tribute payable by Gutter to Bahrein towards securing their frontiers from Naim [al-Na‘īm] and Wahabee Bedouins.
The Political Despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 1 July 1869.
