The Removal of Obstructions to Trade at the Port of Lingah Which Were Lately the Cause of Complaint by British Merchants
- Scope & Content:
- Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 199 of 1869, dated 24 June 1869, with an enclosure numbered 2, dated 29 May 1869.
The enclosure consists of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, to the Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department, forwarding a letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf. Pelly encloses a memorial from Messrs Gray, Paul & Co, general merchants at Bushire [Bushehr] and agents for the British India Steam Navigation Company at Bushire, Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh] and Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ‘Abbas] and agents for Lloyds in the Persian Gulf. The memorial, addressed to the Governor of Bombay, concerns the Persian Government’s enactment that all customs duties levied at Lingah are to be paid by traders to the Governor of Bushire. It is claimed that this will ‘cripple, if not entirely suspend, the trade of Lingah’. In his covering letter Pelly indicates that the ‘annoyances complained of’ have ceased for the present.
The Political Despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 27 July 1869.
