- Despatch from the Foreign Department, Government of India, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 202 of 1869, dated 24 June 1869, with an enclosure numbered 2, dated 28 May 1869.
The enclosure consists of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bombay to the Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department, forwarding correspondence with John Kirk, Acting Political Agent and Consul at Zanzibar, which includes copies of Kirk’s communications with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The correspondence relates to Kirk’s observations on the slave trade between east Africa, Zanzibar and Arabia, including:
- The evasion, by Omani Arabs, of British measures to prevent the export of enslaved persons from Zanzibar to Arabia
- The seizure of dhows with enslaved persons on board, by the soldiers of Syed Majid [Sayyid Mājid bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Sultan of Zanzibar
- The hostility of Omani Arabs to any measures to suppress the slave trade by Syed Majid, and the latter’s dilemma in desiring the ‘good opinion’ of both the people of Oman and the English
- Confirmation by Kirk and the Captain of HMS Nymphe that slave traders are increasingly using the French flag and French protection to cover the traffic in enslaved persons.
The Political Despatch was received in the India Office Secret Department on 27 July 1869.
