This item is a collection to Bombay Political Despatch No. 60 of 22 June 1859, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of Bombay Political Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay’s Political Despatch No. 34 of 4 November 1859 to the Secretary of State for India. It comprises correspondence from G E Stanley at Cairo to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay, claiming that the Secretary of State for India had appointed him on 13 January 1859 as Vice Consul to Judda [Jeddah]. In addition to his salary from the Foreign Office, he claimed entitlement to two hundred pounds annually from the Government of India, in the position of Agent for the Indian Government at Judda. The Government of Bombay could not confirm that the Secretary of State for India made the appointment and, therefore, disputed Stanley’s claims.
