This item is a collection to Bombay Political Despatch No. 76 of 5 August 1859, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of Bombay Political Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay’s Political Despatch No. 34 of 4 November 1859 to the Secretary of State for India. It comprises correspondence from the Government of Bombay to the Secretary of State for India, London, relating to the case of Haji Abdul Kereem bin Amber Davood [Ḥājjī ‘Abd al-Karīm bin ‘Anbar Dāʾūd, also written Hajee Abdool Kurreem, Abdool Kereem bin Amber Davood, and Abd-el-Kereen bin Amber Daood], master and sole owner of the bark Soobloo Salam [Subul al-Salām] of Singapore, tried at the Aden Police Court under the charge of purchasing three ‘slaves’ [enslaved children] while sailing under British colours. The accused was sentenced by the Political Resident and Commandant at Aden for three years of imprisonment with hard labour. The Secretary to the Government of Bombay praised HM Consular Agent at Massowah [Massawa, Eritrea] for his promptitude.
