This item is a collection to Bombay Political Despatch Volume 8 of 23 December 1858, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of Bombay Political Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay’s Political Despatch No. 32 of 20 October 1859 to the Secretary of State for India. It comprises correspondence from the Commissioner of Police, Bombay [Mumbai], to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, regarding the submission and subsequent approval by the Governor in Council of a bill for fifty-three rupees and two annas on account of seventeen manumitted ‘slaves’ [enslaved people] taken to Bombay from the Persian Gulf on the ship Cœur de Leon in November 1857. Zanzibar was identified in statements as the place where the enslaved people were originally kidnapped. The Court of Directors instructed the bill to be forwarded to authorities in Zanzibar.
