A sketch map of the Persian Gulf between Bunder Abbas [Bandar-e ‘Abbas] and Muscat. The map was prepared by Captain Percy Zachariah Cox, Political Agent and Consul in Muscat, and sent to Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm John Meade, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, in a report on arms traffic dated 6 March 1900.
Lines with arrows on the map display the estimated movements of dhows carrying arms from Muscat to locations between Muscat and the Musandam Peninsula. A red line indicates a point beyond which, in the opinion of Captain Cox, British ships can assume that a dhow is carrying arms to Bunder Abbas or other ports in Persia [Iran], and can therefore carry out a search and confiscation in accordance with the January 1898 agreement with the Sultan of Muscat restricting the export of arms from Muscat to Persia and India.
The map bears the printing statement ‘(60.2/1901.1315) F[oreign].O[ffice]. 1631’.
