- This item comprises a secret despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 30 of 1872, dated 10 May 1872. The enclosures are dated from 25 January to 1 May 1872 and concern affairs in Nejd [Najd], Lahsa [al-Ahsa, also written El-Hassa in this item], Bahrein [Bahrain], Kutter [Qatar, also written Guttur in this item], and the Arab Coast.
The papers consist largely of news reports and updates from each location, covering numerous matters, including:
- The Turkish [Ottoman] expedition to Nejd and its occupation of Kutter and Lahsa, including reports of military strength, reinforcements, relations with the brothers Abdullah and Saood bin Faysul [‘Abdullāh and Sa‘ūd bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd] and other tribal leaders in the region, and its popularity with inhabitants
- Relations between Abdullah and Saood bin Faysul
- Movements of vessels in the Gulf
- An outbreak of small pox in Kutter
- Local economic and social conditions.
