- Scope & Content:
- This item comprises copies of a political despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 99 of 1872, dated 10 May 1872. The enclosures date from 25 August 1871 to 6 April 1872 and concern the capture and destruction by HMS Peterel of a dhow in the Mozambique Channel. The dhow is reported to have had enslaved people on board and the papers deal with the questions of what bounty might be given to the captors, and what compensation might be given to the owners of the dhow.
The principal correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; John Kirk, Acting Political Agent, Zanzibar; the Foreign Office; and Lord West, HM Chargé d’Affaires, Paris.
