- This item comprises copies of a political despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 131 of 1872, dated 17 June 1872. The enclosures date from 29 March to 23 May 1872 and concern reports of Turkish [Ottoman] efforts to establish pearl diving operations on the Nejd [Najd] coast.
The papers cover the following matters:
- The arrival of an Englishman at Busreh [Basra] with diving apparatus and in the service of the Turkish Government
- British warnings that they cannot offer any protection to the Englishman
- The exact location of the pearl banks in question and who claims sovereignty over the nearby coastline
- The question of ownership of pearl banks in the Persian Gulf.
