- This item comprises copies of a secret despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 41 of 1872, dated 24 June 1872. The enclosures are dated from 3 March to 5 June 1872, and concern affairs in Nejd [Najd] in relation to the Turkish [Ottoman] expedition there.
The papers cover the following matters:
- Political affairs, particularly the movements of, and relations between, the Turkish authorities and the Wahabee [Wahhābī] brothers Saood and Abdullah bin Fysul [Sa‘ūd bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd and ‘Abdullāh bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd]
- Reports of famine in Nejd caused by locust swarms
- The question of protecting the Bahrein [Bahrain] pearl banks from the threat of Turkish interference.
The principal correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; the Government of India, Foreign Department; Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Captain Charles Grant, Assistant to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, at Bahrein.
