- This item comprises copies of a secret despatch and enclosures from the Government of India, Foreign Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 43 of 1872, dated 24 June 1872. The enclosures are dated 16 April to 9 June 1872 and concern the British position in relation to operations at sea during civil conflict in Oman. The papers discuss how to respond to requests from both Toorkee bin Syed [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Sultan of Muscat and Oman, and Syed Ibrahim bin Ghes [Sayyid Ibrāhīm bin Qays Āl Bū Sa‘īd], leader of rebel forces, for the British to prohibit either side from operating at sea.
The principal correspondents are: the Government of Bombay, Political Department; the Government of India, Foreign Department; Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; Major Edward Charles Ross, Political Agent, Muscat; and Toorkee bin Syed, Sultan of Muscat and Oman.
