- Title:
- The Sultan of Muscat's Request for the Zanzibar Subsidy
- Scope & Content:
- Despatch from the Government of Bombay, Political Department, to the Secretary of State for India, No. 51 of 1872, dated 19 July 1872, including enclosures dated 1-15 June 1872.
The enclosures comprise letters from Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the Government of Bombay. Pelly forwards a letter he has received from Sayid Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Sultan of Muscat, ‘earnestly praying for the Zanzibar subsidy’, with Pelly’s reply. The Sultan describes his want of funds and claims that without the subsidy he will have to ‘give up’ the Government of Muscat since if he cannot pay those in Oman who demand money from him discontent will arise.
