The item comprises enclosures to a despatch, Number 123 of 1839, dated 20 November 1839, from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the East India Company Secret Committee on the subject of sending iron steamers from England on board the merchant ship Urania for service on the rivers Euphrates and Tigris. The enclosures also contain: correspondence with the Superintendent of the Indian Navy, requesting him to recruit forty to fifty European seamen for general service; and with the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, requesting him to prepare suitable barracks for the accommodation of the engineers and artificers proceeding in the Urania for service in the Gulf.
