- This item comprises a copy of [extracts of] an enclosure to a despatch from the Government of Bombay Secret Department to the Secret Committee: Bombay Secret Letter No. 6 dated 1838. Annotated ‘Received per Malta 5 December 1838’. The letters in the enclosure are dated 13-29 June 1838.
The papers consist of a letter, with various enclosures, from Samuel Hennell, Officiating Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the Secretary to the Government of Bombay, concerning the opening ‘by Arabs’ of a mail packet on its way to Bagdad [Baghdad] containing despatches ‘of great importance’ (f 91) from the Secret Committee, to be forwarded to the Bombay Presidency via the Political Agent in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq] and Hennell. Included is a letter to Hennell from Barseigh Johanness, Agent in Charge of the Residency at Bussorah [Basra] describing the incident and listing the original and duplicate mails intended for the Government of Bombay.
