Photograph of the steamer Julnar

The photograph shows the steamer Julnar, owned by the Tigris and Euphrates Steam Navigation Company. The photograph has been taken on the Shatt al-Arab and shows a side view of the steamer, which is moored alongside a riverbank lined with palm trees, at Al Ma‘qil, Basra. The photograph (originally one of a number of copies, the others destroyed in November 1924, according to a note on f 84) accompanied a copy of a letter, also enclosed in the volume (ff 85-65) from H Maclean, Secretary of the Tigris and Euphrates Steam Navigation Company, to the Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office, dated 5 July 1910. The letter concerns attempts on the part of the Governor of Busreh [Basra] to prevent the departure of the Julnar to Baghdad. In the top right corner of the photograph is a pencil inscription: ‘Side view of steamer moored opposite Maaghil [Al Ma‘qil].’
