- ‘Sketch map of Muhammerah and lands in the vicinity of the Turco Persian Boundary as locally recognized’
- Scope & Content:
-
Map labelled ‘Map No.2’, produced in June 1912 by the War Office. A reprinted and updated version of a slightly earlier map included in the same volume (IOR/L/PS/10/291/1, f 53), it is a description of the Persian side of the river Euphrates between Muhammareh [Khorramshahr] and Basra, indicating the position of the Turco-Persian [present-day Iraq and Iran] boundary. Also indicated on the map are: the banks and islands of the Euphrates, with its canals and irrigation systems; the town of Muhammareh, as well as other villages; annotations of land ownership in and around the river. Key buildings in Muhammareh are identified with an accompanying key. The locally recognised Turco-Persian boundary is marked as a black dotted-dashed line. The boundary proposed by the British Government is marked as a solid green line.
The map is the second of four (the others being found at f 260, f 262 and f 263) referenced in a memorandum on the Mohammerah [Khorramshahr] frontier, dated 17 July 1912, and sent by Sir Edward Grey, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, to Sir George William Buchanan, the British Ambassador in Russia (f 259, f 264). The memorandum and maps were to be communicated to the Turkish Ambassador in London by Grey, and to the Russian Government by Buchanan.
