Copy of a sketch map showing routes between Bushire [Bushehr] and Shiraz.
The map indicates the positions of villages and the roads between them (in red ink) and some of the topography of the area. It also notes which routes are practicable and impracticable for artillery and infantry, and the extent of likely resources for a large army (cattle, forage, fuel and water). Information written to the left of the sketch indicates that the map was ‘compiled from verbal information (chiefly received from natives)’, and only general positions and relative distances have been determined. The map is not to scale nor geographically accurate.
The map is undated but it is likely that it was drawn in January 1857.
The original map was signed by J A Ballard, Lieutenant, Superintendent Intelligence Department.
