A sketch plan of the summit of Ras Marbut [Ra’s Marbut] with separate drawings of three elevation details (A, B and C).
The plan shows the locations of the dwellings of various British Government and army officers and three sections labelled:
‘A. Battery & Tower about to be erected as the plan of Special Committee’
‘B. 8 Guns Battery commenced by Lt. Curtis’
‘C. A Low Battery recommended to be built by Captain Haines’
The three separate elevation drawings are as follows:
- A – showing the line of fire: over Captain Haines’s house from the battery now erected and the line if the temporary upper roof of the house were to be removed; over the house of Mr Thomas, P&O [Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company] Agent; and adjacent to the house built by Captain Glass, Artillery, occupied by Major Hammond, Artillery
- B – showing the line of range in a ‘W b S’ [West by Southerly] direction from the new battery and the site of a battery commenced by Lieutenant Curtis and recommended to be completed by Captain Haines
- ‘Side View from the N. Ed. [North Eastward] C’ showing: stones piled up from blasting the ditch of the new battery; Captain Glass's house; Mr Thomas’s house; the top of Captain Haines’s flag staff; and the military road from Aden to the point.
The plan was originally signed by Haines. It was copied in the Chief Engineer’s Office, Bombay, 29 August 1846.
The plan does not include a scale.
