- Title:
- ‘Rough Sketch shewing the Valley of the Yaghi Forts and the Eastern Ridge’
- Scope & Content:
-
Hand drawn copy of a map of Yaghi fortifications and hydrology in the mountainous topography of the Shinwaree [Shinwari] Valley, based on reconnaissance conducted by Captain J W Robertson, Field Engineer, to whom the the map is ascribed. There is a key in the top right corner identifying the position and ownership of settlements and forts located on terraced hills. There is no indication of orientation or scale.
The map is supplementary to the letter (ff 580-581) of Brigadier Thomas Monteath, CB, Commanding Field Force (4th Brigade), dated 27 August 1842, addressed to Captain Ponsonby, Assistant Adjutant-General, then at Camp Mazeena [Mazina], intended as a preface to an account (ff 581-582) by Major Thomas Skinner, Her Majesty’s 31st Regiment, submitted earlier to Brigadier Monteath on the same date. It describes the punitive expedition against members of the Shinwaree [Shīnvārī] Pashtun Tribe thought to be connected with the massacre of East India Company forces lead by Major-General Elphinstone. Brigadier Monteath’s letter contributes his own account of the expedition, including commendations for European officers and native personnel, and concludes with a direct reference to the map described as a ‘sketch of the Shinwaree Valley and the ridge over which the troops passed.’
