Title:
Marriage Contract (SB VI 8986, TM 17839)
Scope & Content:
Marriage contract between a certain Heraclides from Apollonopolis and the daughter of Philemon and Thecla from Apollonopolis. Dated to the 31st year of Heraclius and Heraclius Neos Constantinus, Mecheir, 14th indiction. The papyrus belongs to the archive of Philemon and Thecla.

The frame contains five fragments: two come from a papyrus sheet, one from a papyrus codex, one from parchment codex and another from a parchment sheet or rotulus.

A: Fragment of a papyrus sheet, writing on one side only across the fibres, mounted in glass. Complete on the left and right margin, incomplete on the top and the bottom.

b: Fragment of a papyrus sheet. Incomplete on all sides. Two fragmentary lines written along the fibres.

c: Fragment of a papyrus codex. Written in black ink along the fibres on the front and across them on the back.

d: Fragment of a parchment codex written on both sides with a brownish ink.

E-F: Two joined fragments of a parchment sheet or rotulus, complete only at the bottom. Written on both sides in black ink.

Fragment of a papyrus roll, which was re-used for the text on the verso. Writing runs along the fibres on the recto and across them on the verso. Vertical folds are visible.

The recto preserves two columns of different length, the first, mutilated to the left, with 43 lines, the second, complete, with 28 lines. The columns were numbered on top as 35 and 36. The intercolumn measures 20-27 mm, the lower margin 43 mm, the upper 24 mm, and the right 25 mm.

The back has one column written upside down in relation to the text on the front, with long lines mutilated to the right. The upper, left and lower margins measure 20, 20, 60 mm respectively. The number in red refers to the publication in P.Oxy. VI.

The papyrus is housed in a glass case.
