St Katherine Dock Company contracted with the East India Company to buy the warehouses and houses in Cutler Street, New Street and Devonshire Square for £164,000 at an auction 11 March 1836. The completion of the purchase was postponed by agreement until Michaelmas 1838.
Six houses in Covey Garden, Gravel Lane, three fronting the street and three in the alley behind, together with the site of a house which had fallen down through want of repair. By 1773, another of the houses in the back alley had fallen down.
