Title:
Repayment of a Loan or Payment of Rent (P.Lond. III 1229, TM 22849)
Scope & Content:
Undertaking to pay 120 drachmas in the months of Pauni and Epeiph to Areius, an oil manufacturer, for the value of the fodder produced from the land. Written by Hermeinus, son of Areius. The receipt acknowledging the payment of earnest money follows.

Papyrus sheet, broken off to the left, with surface damage in places; writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. There are 20 lines, all lacking the beginning, for a loss of 10 letters on average. Upper and lower margins survive, with the lower being wide and measuring 65 mm. No margin was left to the right. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Notification to Heraclides, strategus of the Hermopolite nome, from two men concerning the termination of a lease of 19 aruras of land they were renting with a third man, now deceased. They ask that the lessor, who may be Flavius Heraclius, be notified.

Papyrus sheet, broken off at the bottom, lacking the lower and upper left-hand corners, and with holes and surface damage in places; written on one side along the fibres, with the back being blank. There is one column, of which 32 lines survive, the last being very fragmentary. Upper and left margins remain; no margin was left to the right. A sheet-join runs from top to bottom along the right edge. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Left-hand portion of a papyrus sheet, damaged by insect holes and lacking part of the bottom; with some abrasion in places. Writing runs along the fibres on the front, the back being blank. There is one column of 21 lines; margins partly survive, the lower and left being generous; no margin was left to the right. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Papyrus sheet, complete but damaged by holes and abrasion, especially in the lower half; written on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. There is one column of 30 lines. Upper, left and lower margins are extant, with the blank at the bottom measuring 45 mm; no margin was left to the right. Part of a sheet-join running from top to bottom is visible. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

All margins are extant, but the bottom is mutilated. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Fragmentary papyrus sheet, pale-brown, mutilated on the sides, with holes and some surface damage in the preserved portion. Writing runs along the fibres on the front, the back being blank. There are portions of 14 lines, with blank space of c. 20 mm between lines 7 and 8. The upper and lower margins survive, with the blank space at the bottom measuring 65 mm. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass frame.

Recto (SB XX 14306, TM 14859): Record of tax payments levied on real estates, dated to 137−142. Verso (P.Flor. II 233*, TM 11113): Letter from Sarapammon to Heroninus, dated to 22 July 264, with the request to supply fodder for the oxen and to pay the ox-driver and a carpenter.

Fragment of a papyrus roll, pale-brown, with darker patches; damaged by holes throughout; written on both sides. The front bears the ends of 16 lines written along the fibres from a column, broken off at the top too. Trace of another column on the right is visible opposite line 5, after 40 mm. The roll was cut off to host the text on the back, which bears 11 lines running across the fibres. The lower margin is ample. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Papyrus sheet, mutilated at the top and bottom and with insect holes throughout; some abrasion affects the left-hand edge. Both sides bear writing: on the front, there are 26 lines written along the fibres. The left margin partly survives, and no margin was left to the right. On the back there are portions of 5 lines written across the fibres in the lower part of the sheet, upside down in relation to the text on the front. Additionally, there are 2 lines running from top to bottom along the left edge. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Two long and narrow papyrus fragments, broken off at the bottom, in the same hand but not from the same roll; written on both sides, along and across the fibres, with the text continuing on the back, written upside down in relation to the text on the front; housed in a glass frame.

Left fragment (A): Broken off at the bottom; with 29 lines on the front and 32 on the back.

Right fragment (B): Broken off at the bottom; with 16 lines on the front, and 24 lines on the back.

Aurelius Cornelius, son of Eudaemon, of Hermopolis, acknowledges receipt of a loan of 152 drachmas from the pancratiast Aurelius Phoebammon, son of Posidonius, to be repaid within the same month. With date and Cornelius’ subscription at the end.
