Operations ZO and VS: Whilst Vice Admiral Dover Patrol Keyes led two operations to block the mouths of the canals at Zeebrugge and Ostend with blockships, preventing German submarines from entering the North Sea from their Bruges bases. Zeebrugge and Ostend were both raided on the night of 22/23 April 1918 (Operation ZO), whilst a second attempt on Ostend (Operation VS) was launched on the night of 9/10 May 1918.
