Freehold house in James' Valley purchased for £400 by the East India Company in April 1743 from John Brown, formerly surgeon at St Helena. Brown built the house on land granted to him by the Company in 1738.
House built by Governor John Goodwin which was accepted by the East India Company in August 1745 in part payment of his debt. The Company intended to use "the Great House" to lodge their servants and soldiers. The house was subject to a mortgage which was later paid off for £850 18s 6d.
