DEXTER DICKENS COLLECTION: the manuscript portion of a collection of material chiefly relating to Dickens, formed by John Furber Dexter; 1829-1903, n.d Partly printed. The whole collection, including the portion now in the Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, is fully listed in Charles Dickens The J. F. Dexter Collection, British Library (1974). All the letters of Dickens should eventually be printed in M. House, G. Storey and
K. Tillotson (ed.), The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition (1965- ). The collection was used by Dexter's son-in-law, Arthur Harris Cleaver, in compiling
A Bibliography of the Periodical Works of Charles Dickens (1933), and was purchased by the British Museum for the Department of Printed Books from the owner, David M. Stern, on 14 Dec. 1968 (BL Archives). After acquisition by the British Museum, the collection was split between the Departments of Printed Books, Manuscripts and Prints and Drawings. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books, Dec. 1969.
